Although truly an original concept, if I could compare this book to another of my other favorite series it would be the “My Man Jeeves” stories by P.G. Wodehouse. Both authors utilize laugh-out-loud, off the wall humor and preposterously hilarious situations.
Overall, an exhilarating book that is impossible to put down.

Johnny 12 Steps takes you on a journey of unexpected twists and turns where Tory cleverly interjects original humor. There are several one-liners, you will find yourself chuckling along the way. Typically, I will read comedy that is overtly labeled and portrayed as such, but I took a risk here and am glad I did.
From the first page this book had me laughing - it reminded me a bit of "John Dies in the End" with its deadpan silliness, crazy characters and happenings and seemingly deluded lead. Some of the verbal twists are just genius. The send up of gangster stereotypes are hilarious. I'll read anything Nick Tory writes after this! Laugh out loud, short and just FUN.
This is an amusing short story that can be read in a single sitting. Nick Tory has a strange sense of humor that can also be a little dark, at times. A fast moving book with a number of giggles. All in all I enjoyed the read.
'Johnny 12 Steps' by Nick Tory is a fast paced and witty novella that cleverly draws parallels to the Alcoholic Anonymous 12 Steps recovery program as the reader follows the steps of a homeless ne'er-do-well named Johnny, who finds himself embroiled in a mess with finger-amputating gangsters as he tries to impress Sarah, with whom he has fallen in love (or more likely raging lust).
The author uses very precise language, and creates appropriately cringe-worthy situations in this somewhat tongue-in-cheek story, which this reviewer was delighted to find had more twists than the average bag of pretzels.
Tory's style reminded me of one of my favourite US writers, Carl Hiassen, and I recommend this book to fans of humour, satire, and crime fiction. It is available on .

Johnny is a surprisingly fresh character. You know how the hero in some stories is flawed but smart? You also know the hero's second banana - the person with the funny and cutting comebacks, makes the one good move to save our hero but always needs to bailed out by the hero in the end? Yeah, Johnny is neither. He's the lunkhead who guards the villian's house and is shot in the head from 200 yards away while he watches some sports game on one of the security system monitors.
Nick Tory lets this lunkhead live and actually be the hero. He gives us the hilarious insight into what it would be like to be that idiot. He also gives that idiot a well rounded cast of characters. Johnny Tee is written so we, the reader, now know how the dense people of the world actually think and somehow survive.
We get to complete the joke based on what Johnny thinks. An example from Johnny 12 Steps "You meet a lot of crazies riding a bus across the country. That's what they always say, but I never felt that way. I generally just passed the time talking to the quietest people about random thoughts that entered my head and going off on a lot of tangents." Thank you Nick, so that's how these dense idiots think.
This short account of a compulsive brawler by the name of Johnny Tee is full of dark humor and edgy witticism. Many times I found myself laughing aloud as I read through the book. The clever spin on the 12 steps program was one of the sharpest ideas for a book I have seen this year. Definitely worth the price of admission. If you don't laugh when you read this, you are either (A) dead, (B) too sensitive for your own good, or (C) born without a sense of humor. Read it, you'll like it.
Nick Tory did a wonderful job of making me laugh in his story Johnny 12 Steps. Johnny Tee has decided to turn his life around. He has been known to have a short temper and a problem with gambling. Because of this, he has found himself in some terrible situations. So one day he decided to do the thing that all people who have problems do, follow the twelve steps laid out by Alcoholics Anonymous to find that better life. The only problem is that Johnny Tee tries to make it through these twelve steps in twelve days. In the process, he gets mixed up with the girl of his dreams, who hates him, his best friend, who despises him, and the worst mobster that he could possibly go up against, who, at first, wants to help him, but in the end finds it would be easier just to kill him. The story has a laugh on every page, the only problem being is that there aren't many of them. I literarily sat down one evening and read the book. I enjoyed it very much, but I just wished there was more of it to enjoy. Luckily, Nick Tory has written three more installments into the series which means if I have another night free, I will download the next one and laugh again.
